Spanning over 2000 kilometres in length, the Great Barrier Reef is said to be the world's largest natural living structure and is the only one you can see from outer space. It's no wonder that it has World Heritage listing. It is almost parallel to the Queensland Coast from the coastal town of Bundaberg right up to the tip of Cape York.
The reef is teeming with an abundance of marine life and consists of over 3000 individual reefs and coral cays. The reef is surrounded with hundreds of beautiful tropical islands which contain some of the world's most spectacular sun-drenched beaches.
The Whitsundays group of islands benefit from being located at the closest point off the Queensland coast to the Great Barrier Reef, which gives you an ideal base to explore this aquatic wonderland. The Reef offers shelter to the Whitsundays and protects it from huge ocean swells, therefore making it one of the safest regions for sailing and cruising in the world.
The naturally formed "Heart Reef" which can be viewed from the air, is situated in the Whitsundays and is a must see on your trip there... especially for honeymooners! Another sightseeing favourite is Whitehaven Beach, the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsundays. The beach is over 7 kilometres long and is made from pure white silica sand which is among the purest in the world. Wade along the beach and let your feet sink into the sand and then slither into the warm tropical waters, and you'll see why so many people from all over the world go there.
The Whitsundays contain some really beautiful islands and in this post we'll explore two, Bedarra and Brampton.
