Father's Day Weekend Near Los Angeles

If Dad enjoys the outdoors, and in particular the ocean, treat him to a Father's Day weekend with some fun in the sun on the shore and beyond in Ventura County, about an hour's drive north on the 101 from Los Angeles.

Invigorate your senses and breathe the sea air in Oxnard and Ventura, where beach and sea activities include bicycle, kayak and paddle boat rentals, sports fishing excursions and whale watching. The Channel Islands National Park is perfect for Dads who appreciate nature. On the way to California's answer to the Galapagos Islands, Island Packers boats from Ventura or Oxnard harbor bring visitors up close to dolphins, bald eagles, seals, sea lions and more than 200 other animal and plant life

If Dad has enough energy after a day at sea and the beach, let the kids take him to Golf 'N Stuff in Ventura. Beat Dad in a game of miniature golf or join forces in an intense game of lazer tag. There are bumper cars, bumper boats and a crazy arcade--everything to bring out the kid in him.

The next day, he can play a round of golf at one of the area's award-winning public golf courses with ocean and mountain views. If golf isn't his thing, sign him up for a class at Jim Hall Kart Racing in Oxnard where students suit up and learn to drive ultra-condensed formula karts.

For Dads who love cars but don't want all that speed, take him to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard. The museum is open on Saturdays and features classic French automobiles from the art deco era. If there's still time during his busy weekend, Dad can also take in the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Camarillo, which features vintage aircraft and an extensive collection of World War II memorabilia--from guns and ammo to military uniforms. The museum even offers flights in its vintage aircraft.

Be prepared for a little haggling when it comes to choosing a restaurant everyone agrees on, but ultimately, letDad choose! Don't forget to consider Spencer Makenzie's in Ventura known for its enormous selection of fish tacos including shrimp, calamari, ahi and ceviche tacos, Wood Ranch BBQ in Camarillo with its out-of-this-world original peanut coleslaw and Hook Burger Bistro in Oxnard, which specializes in, you guessed it, burgers. There is no shortage of Father's Day brunch options either, so dad may want to consider Alexander's in the Four Points Sheraton, Ventura, or Capistrano's in the Mandalay Beach Embassy Suites, Oxnard.

By the end of the weekend, Dad will feel like he truly had a weekend away from the office anda well-deserved Father's Day he'll never forget.
