By land, Komodo National Park is an island archipelago painted by arid, savannah-like terrains and a proud home to the largest lizard on the planet - the legendary Komodo dragon. By sea, the national park forms the apex of the world's marine biodiversity, yielding more species of coral and fish than anywhere else in the world. Combine the two into one amphibious safari, and you have an adventure enthusiasts dream about! The only problem is getting there.

All aboard! A revamped, live-aboard pirate ship provided the mode while seven eager wayfarers, two dive masters, three captains and one chef provided the means. Luxuries included an "open-air" bathroom, large wooden sun deck, bunk-style sleeping quarters and, of course, FOOD - exotic fruits, freshly caught seafood and fragrant Indonesian staples cooked up by the best chef these seas have ever known.

Sailing east from the Gili Islands, along the northern shores of Lombok and Sumbawa Islands, our first three days at sea saw nothing but smooth sailing and remarkable scuba diving. Less technical in nature, but unparalleled in beauty, each dive provided the opportunity to hone skills in preparation for what was to come.

A receptacle for confused currents, the waters of Komodo National Park are ravaged by whirlpools and fast-moving tides. A navigator's nightmare and a diver's ultimate challenge, the moment we breached the park threshold there was no going back!

Our dive master's main disclaimer was simple: "When we hit the water, you're on your own." Basically, if the currents swept you from a dive site, or a downward current pulled you further into the deep, the dive masters were not pursuing. Reassuring, huh?

Castle Rock, a coral-laden pinnacle resting some 80 feet below the surface, was my favorite of the dive series. Performing what's called a negative entry, the moment we broke the aquatic plane, a vigorous downward swim was required. Fierce currents and poor visibility did their best to confuse my descent, but after a few minutes of spirited swimming and rushed equalization, I saw the site!

Jackpot! Uh, more like sharkpot. As I sorted out my buoyancy, three white tip reef sharks sorted me out. Sleeping right below my fins, I thanked my lucky stars for good buoyancy - otherwise I would have landed smack dab in the middle of their bedroom. Carefully steering out of shark alley, the show continued as dozens of white and black tip reef sharks revealed themselves from behind the sea's thick blue curtain. These are recognized first by their brilliant white "smiles" and next by their prominent dorsal fins following close behind. Mesmerized by the dizzying rows of teeth and death-cold stares, I perched precariously frozen to the ledge for the most exhilarating dive of my life.

After surviving Komodo's dragons of the deep, it was time to challenge their relative above. Measuring around 8-feet long, weighing over 200 pounds and sporting some 60 teeth, the Komodo dragons represent thousands of years of carnivorous adaptation. Similar to sharks, their teeth are serrated and replace themselves regularly to assure ample flesh-tearing capabilities.

Like snakes, Komodo dragons have reticulating jaws, allowing for consumption of large prey. And akin to alligators, dragons can take down prey 10 times their size. This is due to a characteristic distinctly Komodo - a virulent, deadly bacteria injected with just one bite. As the poison moves through the bloodstream, prey become weak and eventually retreat to the nearest watering hole for recovery. The dragons know, however, there will be no recovery. Positioning themselves around the watering hole, dragons wait patiently until the animal is a breath away from death before finishing the deed, eating everything except the occasional skull or antlers.

Knowing very little about these creatures before the trip, I set foot on Rinca Island with a gleeful, landlubbing pep in my step. Practically skipping down the dusty path to the park reserve building, I was shocked to find the reception committee comprised numerous dragons. Hanging out under the shade of a few raised shacks, the dragons watched our every move. Covered in rough scales with a distinctly Jurassic build, it occurred to me that we were looking at a piece of the past - the oldest living descendent of the dinosaurs. Silent, stoic and stationary, they could have been painted into the scorched landscape if not for their one repetitive vital sign - a long, snake-like tongue, flicking about, licking its chops in preparation for its next inevitable meal.

Linking up with a local guide for an island tour, our only form of protection came in his 5-foot-nothing, buck-ten soaking wet frame and long, wish-boned stick. He assured us of safety, but when we uncovered the first water buffalo skull, my heart sank. The reality of what we were doing washed over. The dragons may appear slow with a laborious, four-legged strut, but their lightning-fast reflexes and toxic bite were not to be underestimated. Some sprawled across rocks soaking in the sun, while others patiently waited in the dry bush. But every dragon spotted had one thing in common - they never took their eyes off us!

After eight days of sailing, a dozen world-class scuba dives and a trip to see the infamous dragons, we dropped anchor back in the Gili Islands $1,000 poorer. But we felt a million times richer, having experienced all the wonders of Komodo National Park in the most spectacular of ways!

The Landscape of Dali

The Catalan region of the Costa Brava in north-eastern Spain is usually associated with beaches full of tourists and package holiday trips. However, turn the clock back 100 years and the region was somewhat different. Untouched by tourism until the mid 1960's, the Costa Brava was mainly a fishing region, with small fishing villages and towns pocketed along the Costa Brava coastline.

This was the landscape into which the surrealist artist Salavador Dali was born in 1904, and the spectacular scenery and lighting of the region inspired many of his finest paintings. Dali was born in the town of Figueres which is approximately 35km north of Girona (Gerona) Airport, and around 150km north of Barcelona. Apart from his artwork, Dali has left 2 legacies to his admirer's - his home in Port Lligat near Cadaques, and the museum which he designed in his hometown of Figureres, both of which are open to the public.

Cadaques is a small fishing village around an hour and a half drive north-east of Girona. Cadaques is where Dali spent many of his later years, and the spectacular coastline provided the inspiration for many of his best known paintings. Cadaques itself is a former fishing port, but is now an exclusive tourist resort, popular with the French and Spanish. Dali's house is located in the small village of Port Lligat, slightly to the north of Cadaques. Dali's house is open to the public, but check opening hours before visiting.

The house itself was formerly a number of small fishermen's houses which Dali purchased and converted into a single palatial home where he lived with his wife Gala, and painted many of his most famous paintings. There are many strange exhibits inside the house such as a stuffed polar bear which greets visitors, and a tiny cage in Dali's bedroom which once contained a cricket. Dali loved the sound of the cricket singing. Don't expect to find many of Dali's paintings at the house, although there is a large unfinished work in one of the rooms.

The Dali museum in Figueres was designed by the artist himself, and although it contains the world's most comprehensive collection of his original paintings, it is the internal design and architecture which is possibly even more striking. Dali was a big fan of the visual arts, and many of the works in the museum are visual experiences which were intricately designed by Dali. In the busy summer months there may be queues at the museum, so it is worth booking tickets in advance.

I have been to several islands in my lifetime and while most of them share certain common characteristics like a warm tropical climate, warm ocean and splendid diving opportunities, none have yet managed to get my pulse rate ignited quite like Phuket, Thailand's "Pearl of the Andaman Ocean." Arriving, an atmosphere of excitement engulfs your very being, something tells you to expect the unexpected, that anything is possible and that no image on the internet, travel brochure or magazine could have prepared you for what awaits in Phuket. When the island opens before your eyes as you approach and it's exotic beauty is revealed from the air, you know that yesterdays fantasies is about to become today's realities.

I am not so much one to make my island holiday about the luxurious Phuket hotel accommodation and spend a lot of time inside the resort wall, but rather tend to save as much on this department. However, the hotels and resorts on this exotic jungle covered rock most definitely are what attracts many from around the globe. Firstly there is an overflow of water from the lake, which is fed its pristine fresh water from the local mountains, secondly the normally 100m wide Waikato River is squeezed through a narrow 15-20 metre wide space which was created by volcanic activity, this also resulted in several rather large drops in the level of the land - this combination of squeezing and dropping forces an incredible 220,000 litres of water, per second to flow through the gap, creating a simply incredible amount of force as well as some beautiful waterfalls.

The water itself is mesmerising, the beautiful shades of blue and green, complemented by the white foam are easy to lose yourself in, then as you move along the falls you'll see the awesome power of the water as it drops and churns creating more awe inspiring sights as well as sounds. As the gorge starts to widen towards the end the water starts to calm and it's very relaxing.

You can get to the falls via a five minute drive from the town centre, or choose to take the Aratiatia Rapids Walk or the Spa Park Walk and if you would like to get a little more up close and personal you can even jump in a Jet Boat.

Whale Watching in the Bay of Biscay

Anyone crossing the Bay of Biscay by ship is well aware of the tendency of heavy swells and atrocious weather. So much so, that if you are a person to easily get seasick, then a bout of seasickness for you is often a guarantee!

However, if you are interested in whales, then you are visiting the right area. A fact that a representation of the North Atlantic Right whale is included on the coats of arms of some of the Basque fishing villages on Spain's northern coast, is actually a reminder from the days when commercial whaling was allowed, a commercial 'sport' that began as long ago as the eleventh century. The right whales, together with their calves, came in close to the shore in the bad weather for protection, and so did the whaling fleets, but not for protection. Now, since new whaling regulations have come about, and the whales a protected species, the Bay of Biscay has become a premium area for whale watching trips to observe and enjoy the activities of the gentle giants of the sea.

Research organisations started collecting data from about 1993 and then the first organised whale watching tour started to visit this area in 1996. Since then many whale watching cruises of companies, charities and scientists, make use of the ferry trips to watch the whales and gather data on the cetaceans of the region, and on the shore, many interested spectators gather to observe them as well.

The seabed slopes sharply further out and long-finned pilot whales, fin whales and dolphins take advantage of the prey on offer in the nutrient-rich currents of the deep Bay of Biscay. As the sea slope begins to rise again towards the shores of Spain, one finds Cuvier's, Sowerby's and True's beaked whales.

Corkscrew Swamp - Southwest Florida's Watershed

The 11,000-acre Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is home of the largest remaining virgin bald cypress forest in North America. Courtesy of the National Audubon Society, visitors can enjoy the sites and sounds of the sanctuary from a 2.25-mile raised wooden boardwalk, which begins with pine Flatwoods. It is here where you can spot the occasional oak tree and hardwood hammock. This is an area where natural fires occur frequently, which is evidenced by the dark, burnt down tree stumps. It is higher than the wetlands, and there are pine trees, palms, and the popular saw palmetto. The atmosphere here can be described as quiet and peaceful. The swamp has been here for thousands of years, and looking at the beauty of the wild flowers, made shivers run down my spine. This is nature at its best.

Visitors who venture further into the swamp, will eventually reach the pond cypress buffer. It separates the prairie/pine Flatwoods from the bald cypress forest. This area lies much lower, as evidenced by the pooling of water and the typical cypress knees. There is a lot of sawgrass, ferns, and a variety of flowering plants to be seen. It is quite impressive to look at the majestic cypress trees, which are close to 600 years old. They reach a height of 130 feet.

Deeper into the cypress swamp, the Audubon Society has built an elevated observation platform, giving the visitor a spectacular view of the central marsh. This is an amazing site; it is so dominant and strong, yet so peaceful. It looked like the storks were nesting here in the tops of the cypress trees. There is a stork soaring high above the ground. He was landing on a tree on the Western edge of the marsh.

Moving along on the boardwalk, visitors are taken to an area called the Lettuce Lakes. Here, the water surface is covered with water lettuce and other floating plants. Turtles are sunbathing alongside these deep, treeless channels, or sloughs. These cypress sloughs lie within a swamp. They are deeper water channels, which are very important to Florida's ecological communities. Sloughs drain water, but in times of high water, they may actually overflow in all directions. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, and during prolonged droughts, water levels fall even below the deep ponds. Ecologists have learned that timing and distribution of water are critical in a swamp. Because Corkscrew is so flat -- the highest spot is only five feet above the bottom of the deepest lake -- water sometimes actually runs upstream after a heavy local shower, spreading in all directions to even out the "mound" of water dumped by the storm. Natural drainage is by slow, overland flow to the south. There are no well-defined streams along the southwestern coast, where the swamp merges with the estuarine mangrove forest.

In an ecosystem with hills and rivers, basic hydrology is not too difficult to understand: rain falls and drains into little streams that run into bigger streams. The bigger streams drain into rivers and so on, eventually, into the ocean. Today's research is aimed at improving our understanding of both the environment and the processes that underlie the Earth's support systems. But this is not what happens at Corkscrew.

When it rains here the water seems to spread everywhere at first, then begins to seek out the faint indentations between the floorboards and flows slowly along them toward some imperceptibly lower point. Southwest Florida's floorboards are a series of broad geologic folds that run northwest southeast across the Big Cypress region. These rock ridges have eroded, and the valleys between have filled in with sand and peat. The result is a landscape so flat that water cannot develop sufficient gravity-aided erosive power to carve out river valleys and instead spread overland and travels slowly to the sea as sheet flow. Subtle elevation changes in the topography may have a profound influence on natural and human-made systems. Natural water supply systems collect the rainwater and bring it to us. These natural systems are of utmost importance to our water supply and the quality of life. We all live in a watershed-- the area that drains to a common waterway, such as a stream, lake, estuary, wetland, or even the ocean -- and our individual actions can directly affect it.

What is a Watershed?

It's the area of land that catches rain and snow and drains or seeps into a marsh, stream, river, lake or groundwater. In this area all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. John Wesley Powell, scientist geographer, put it best when he said that a watershed is:"that area of land, a bounded hydrologic system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community."

Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes, and they cross county, state, and even national boundaries. No matter where we are, we are in a watershed! These natural systems are critically important to our water supply and quality of life.

Beautiful, Tropical Hawaiian Islands

What can you say about Hawaii that hasn't been said so many times before? It's beautiful, tropical and has some of the most amazing scenery you'll see anywhere on earth. There are seven populated islands and for this exercise we'll take a look at just three of them.

Oahu

Maui
