The Bread Basket of the Republic

As a tourist destination, Kitale is pretty much overlooked by the travel guides. However, a quick stroll round the town would be enough to let you know that the tourists find it anyway. What is it about this little town that would attract a run of the mill tourist to visit? Well, let's see - apart from the fact that it is truly spectacularly beautiful, especially in the mornings and evenings when the sun rises and sets over Mt Elgon; visible from any corner of the town - there is that golf course at Kitale Club, availability of lots of affordable food, easy transport by boda boda bikes, motorcycles and taxis. Or you can just stretch out your thumb and hope for a lift from the rather friendly natives. There is a Kitale museum which one must admit, is a bit of a museum itself - but very educational if you want to know how surrounding communities lived before the advent of apartments. There is also a game park situated a few kilometres outside of Kitale town, plus as aforementioned, Mount Elgon for those mountain climbing enthusiasts. The real attraction of Kitale though, is peace and quiet. If you're looking for a place where the hustlers don't accost you in the street, and you can just spend all day sitting at a cafe watching the foot traffic without anyone hassling you, this is the town to be at. It never gets too hot, or too cold thanks to the altitude, and the abundance of vegetation so if you're writing a book, or need to escape from the world for a bit - this is the ideal place to go.

This is a little town which combines a village atmosphere with metropolitan amenities such as the golf course, the airstrip from which a local flight does a regular commute to Nairobi, swimming pool, night clubs, no traffic, Internet connectivity and megamarts to satisfy all your shopping needs. Yet most of the town remains exactly the same as its been for the last century. This combination of old and new while not unique is nevertheless picturesque. For anyone looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourist spots without missing out on all the amenities of civilisation, Kitale is the ideal spot to take a holiday. So pack up your bags, book your flight or bus ticket - you can even use the train which will drop you just one town away - and go see for yourself.
